Green houses

In an exclusive extract from his new book, our eco-correspondent, Richard Hammond, picks 30 of the best green places to stay around the world.

A decade ago, a book on eco-friendly places would have been limited to a few organic farmstays and expensive eco lodges in remote areas. Yet the recent blossoming of eco-consciousness has led to a huge rise in the number of green places that are doing their bit for the planet, from luxury yurt camps in the Andalucian hills to hi-tech cabanas in Mexico.

Green Places to Stay features 165 places in over 50 countries, yet it only scratches the surface of what is available. In the UK alone, the Green Tourism Business Scheme (green-business.co.uk) - a certification scheme that recognises environmental hotels and travel companies - has recently certified its 500th member.

Worldwide, standards of eco-friendliness vary enormously and to the casual eye it can be difficult to distinguish authentic places from those that are trying to ride cheaply on the green wave. All the places in Green Places to Stay were visited and their green credentials checked out. I inspected many of them and saw a variety of ways in which owners are genuinely trying to lessen their impact on the environment. Their efforts go much further than simply asking guests to put towels out for washing; many owners have invested in long-term energy saving technologies or developed their own ingenious methods for saving energy and water and dealing with waste in an environmentally friendly way.

Many extend their green credentials to a social dimension, ensuring that the type of holidays they offer provide real benefits for their local communities. The owners of these innovative green places are the pioneers of the tourism of tomorrow.

Ecocabin, Shropshire

It looks like a vast garden shed. Within, splashes of colour (bright red sofas and armchairs, chunky blue checks on the bedcovers) set off white lime-plastered walls and ash floors. Tiles are hand-made, fabrics are natural and organic, toiletries biodegradable, the cooker "slow". It is light, earthy, fun and refreshing. There is even an "honesty" store for your shopping.
