Straw Bale Cabin, East Yorkshire

The first mobile straw bale building in the world (as far as we know) and the UK’s first holiday home made from straw. Ready Christmas 2006.

1 bedroomed, self catering holiday accommodation in rural East Yorkshire (approx. 20 miles from York, Hull and Doncaster)

Construction

  • Locally made steel chassis (as used for timber lodges and conventional park homes)
  • Walls of locally grown wheat straw
  • Plastered internally with clay and externally with lime render (strengthened with locally grown hemp) (although I’m still working on the hemp)
  • Roof of Cornish cedar shingles
  • Sheeps wool insulation to floor and ceiling
  • Wooden double glazed windows
  • Wooden or marmoleum flooring
  • Natural paints and finishes

Town
Howden (3 miles) is a quiet market town boasting a 14th century Minster, The Bishop’s Manor (given by Willam the conqueror in 1081) and the Ashes Park.

There is an excellent variety of small shops, cafés and restaurants. Howden Live Arts provide a full programme of entertainment in the Shire Hall.
